The fact that we may have a vaccine that prevents 90%+ of disease, severe disease, and even death from COVID-19 within weeks really puts the "let the disease rip" position into perspectivehttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1333584424122732545 …

This is astonishingly good news that I would like to see published Nevertheless, it appears that the Moderna vaccine is extremely efficacious and (as far as I know) safe COVID-19 vaccination is just around the corner, hang in there! https://twitter.com/kakape/status/1333380431329234944 …

You have to wonder - deaths from COVID-19 will almost certainly be largely preventable very soon, so why are people still pretending that massive death tolls are acceptable?

COVID-19 is a vaccine preventable illness. (Repeat as necessary).

If only 60% of people take the vaccine, how will the virus act? I'm guessing about 40% of people will not take it. So it will still be largely active in communities, right? But it will only, technically, effect the not immunized. So what will the virus do?

Two reasons: (1) ignorance and (2) sociopathy. (Both reasons for most pushing this view.)

I've pointed to WW1 as a historical parallel to our current era of collective insanity. The 100,000s of deaths that will happen btwn the discovery of an effective vaccine & mass vaccination will be nearly as pointless as the post-Armistice WW1 deaths.https://twitter.com/ewanbirney/status/1331876243793469441 …

          Ryan Hisner added,

          Ewan Birney @ewanbirney
A friend of mine reminded me "I can't help thinking of the parallel of the time between the signing of the Armistice in WW1 at 05:45 and it coming into effect at 11:00 on 11 November 1918 during which time there were 10,944 casualties of whom 2,738 died."

You also have to wonder what the unknowns for a new type of vaccine are, right?
