The fact that we may have a vaccine that prevents 90%+ of disease, severe disease, and even death from COVID-19 within weeks really puts the "let the disease rip" position into perspectivehttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1333584424122732545 …

This is astonishingly good news that I would like to see published Nevertheless, it appears that the Moderna vaccine is extremely efficacious and (as far as I know) safe COVID-19 vaccination is just around the corner, hang in there! https://twitter.com/kakape/status/1333380431329234944 …

You have to wonder - deaths from COVID-19 will almost certainly be largely preventable very soon, so why are people still pretending that massive death tolls are acceptable?

Don't kid yourself. It will be late spring/early summer before the vaccination rate is adequate. We're still in for some rough times.

As we speak before there is a lot of nuances in the "let it rip" rhetoric. Who let it rip? Well, that depends as always. When you have a declared epidemic at hand already, well while not easy to see, it was those that tried suppression.https://twitter.com/federicolois/status/1317254995801198592 …

Controversial opinion: those that say its not possible to shield the vulnerable, also won't be able to prove if there is a difference (or lack of it) between the trajectory of the virus at Madrid and Stockholm. Who do you think has let it rip?

You said before, people come to epidemiology for the uncertainty, they stay for the nuance. In the vaccine gamble nuance is king. It is not the same gamble for everybody, and there is no single solution to the conundrum. It very much depends.https://twitter.com/federicolois/status/1309146950344863744 …

The arrival of a vaccine in the context of COVID can be modeled using game theory as a gamble over the expectation of the final death toll. Most countries will have negative payoff after August 2020. Change my mind. cc @LDjaparidze

That depends on how much faith someone has left in the global healthcare system to produce a safe vaccine. My former blind trust in that system has likely been permanently destroyed by 2020. The vaccine may be safe, but now it’s from a system I no longer trust.
