Another thought I've had about this paper - my understanding was that public school closures in the US this year have differed from state to state and even county to country. Is that true?!https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1327872367893176320 …

Ok, so I've had a read of this paper (which has been all over the news) that says quite explicitly that closing schools will probably cause more years of life lost than leaving them open in a pandemic Let's do some peer-review on twitter! 1/n https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1327791987014074369 … pic.twitter.com/ZxjMUXem5y

Because as far as I can tell, the authors have not assessed this complexity in their exposure metric. I also don't see any discussion of school holidays even though presumably there were some during the period from March to August?

They appear to have taken the estimate from one school district in each state capitol. I'm not from the US but to be this seems like it would not be adequate to actually estimate the number of days of missed schoolingpic.twitter.com/LcVoOlYtwK

Not just that. Policy can differ from one school district to the next. A county can have dozens of school districts.

Agree. I live near Green Bay, Wisconsin and each district can take their own approach at the moment (currently ranging from fully in person to fully remote, and everything in between).

You are correct. For example, California is on a tier system where neighboring counties could be on a different phase than another which allows one county to have some in person teaching versus the other doing completely distance learning.

Yes, that's true. Closures even vary district to district within the same county. For example, our school district remains 100% closed, while some neighboring districts just a handful of miles away are doing hybrid learning for younger grades.

Add to that, many private schools w/ resources to mitigate the risk opened, while many public ones remained closed.

Absolutely. Public Schools remote only in Somerville, Ma. Hybrid in Cambridge, Ma. Lots of variables, like teacher union power, ventilations, etc
