I tend to think the bigger problem (faced by JHU, Stanford, HMS) is actually the opposite. What do they do when one of their own faculty goes rogue, misrepresents (or lies) about data and their meaning, and the imprimatur of the university has been co-opted for harm.

I agree. There are almost no barriers to prominent academics doing shoddy and/or outright false work and getting huge media attention, aside from a general sense of disapproval and maybe some mild censure in a year or two
