On the one hand, discussion about public policy to contain the pandemic, even in places with massive outbreaks, is necessary and good On the other, a lot of regulation opponents talk just so much nonsense

Almost all of the excess deaths in the US are from COVID. States without any lockdown have excess deaths far beyond their official COVID count. As a counter-example, there are multiple countries that have had heavy lockdowns without seeing excess deaths.
