Good point, this. The term "lockdown" is largely meaningless, and used in the same way that "nanny state" usually is. Whatever policy people dislike becomes "lockdown" no matter how reasonable it may behttps://twitter.com/BillHanage/status/1331800668559073287 …

‘Lockdown’ is *not* a technical term. It’s become a scary sounding bogeyman phrase for any intervention that someone doesn’t want to comply with, regardless of whether it has a public health benefit https://t.co/72270qc4Bw

It’s especially bizarre and meaningless when it varies so drastically. In one country, lockdown means you can only go out for essential reasons, and in another *cough* UK *cough* it just means the pubs close a teensy bit earlier. Also, isn’t it prison terminology?

And the "lockdown" and curfew in Victoria were found to be justifiable in the High Court and Supreme Court. Officially reasonable.

The herders think ANY sort of restriction qualifies as a lockdown. Make a bar close at 10...that’s a lockdown to them.

It is a good point, and it ties in nicely with your earlier point about testing one's interest in science. Being able to engage in meaningful discourse with those who disagree with your position goes hand in hand with using terms that don't come with incendiary baggage.

It's not a technical term because it didn't exist until 9 months ago. To say it means something you don't want to comply with is dumb. This is what we were told to do in the spring. We didn't make it up out of thin air. So, what did we all do in March and April?

Honestly people who are in favour of a lockdown in some cases use the term too. So it's not really a pejorative.
