When I talk to non-academics and explain this to them, they can hardly belief that we authors/reviewers work for free and that you pay to be author. I guess many don't say but think "what kind of fool are you to do this"?

It’s professional bodies I like “Hi! Considered applying for fellowship?” - “what does it entail?” “Write a submission” - “ok. What do I get?” “Kudos. Better letters. Recognition” - “I already have the one that counts. What about subs?” “Yeah, they’re higher.....”
