Is there actually an obligation for riders to wear hi-viz? Like, are there regulations that specify that? https://twitter.com/abcnews/status/1331012461906984960 …pic.twitter.com/BKYQZ8pdLn

These deaths are incredibly sad and no matter how you look at it, four in three months is unacceptable. I'd be willing to bet that a construction site would be essentially shut down for something similar.
I am curious about the statistics though — are food delivery riders involved in accidents at a higher rate than cyclists generally?
An important number is the denominator - how many delivery riders are there in Australia? If it's 500, 5 deaths is huge, if it's 50,000 then it's less dangerous than some of the worst offenders like agriculture
I think a better denominator would be hours on the road.
Disagree, if we're going to compare to other careers then the death rate per 100k workers is pretty standard
I wasn't comparing with other careers, but other riders.
I think that's a bit useless tho tbh, because most riders spend a fraction of the time on the road so even if the per km risks are similar the actual risk is going to be magnified enormously for delivery drivers
Does that mean you're suggesting a higher standard of safety should be expected for people riding for work than those riding for other reasons? Obvs doing more of a risky activity increases overall risk, but I think all cyclists should expect a low(er) level of risk.
I cycle to work! I'd love it if cycling were a safer activity, and I think our current road system is a travesty wrt cyclists. I do think that this is still a bit different to people riding for work, because the comparison should ideally be a job
