You have to wonder what the "herd immunity through everyone getting sick" people are saying now that there is likely to be an effective vaccine beginning roll-out within weeks/months

I mean, the entire IDEA of letting everyone get sick was that a vaccine was a distant future that we couldn't rely on Well, now it appears that we probably can

It would be the height of hypocrisy to not shift your message given that the foundation of the argument has now completely changed

It's much harder to justify letting your parents die from COVID-19 when there's every reason to believe that we'll be able to prevent this soon

Not only that, but the foundation of the argument was that the alternative measures we'd need to take are untenable. That argument is undermined if they're short-term.

Apparently the WHO doesn't think they are short-term. They won't ever stop this until we make them stop.https://twitter.com/DrTedros/status/1328291650372775937 …

A vaccine on its own will not end the #COVID19 pandemic. We will still need to continue: -Surveillance -Testing, isolating & caring for cases -Tracing & quarantining contacts -Engaging communities -Encouraging individuals to be careful #ACTogether #EB147

The only reasonable argument I’ve seen is this, but again, I’d rather live another day to keep fighting than risk dying to get better results nowhttps://twitter.com/BallouxFrancois/status/1331042684291739648 …

The likely eventual emergence of 'vaccine escape' strains, and the resulting need for a vaccine arms race (red queen like), would be easier to manage if the population had acquired immunisation through a mix of vaccination and infection, rather than vaccination alone. 12/ pic.twitter.com/z30Fl47lQP
