If you want to know who is an expert on vaccination programs, look for the people focusing on the supply chain side of the new vaccine as opposed to the 70% efficacy that they found in a clinical trialhttps://twitter.com/onisillos/status/1330780021133340674 …

The truth of the matter is that, while efficacy in clinical trials is important, a better supply chain may make the biggest difference in people actually getting the vaccine in real life

This is even more true when you consider that a cheaper supply chain makes the vaccine cheaper too, and most of the world probably will have trouble affording -80 degree cold storage

Also worth noting that a vaccine that is 70% effective in the real world is still good enough to reach herd immunity so in practice it is probably not the deciding factor

will whether someone has already had Covid affect when they would have access to the vaccine?

It's likely better than 70%, but to justify a stronger claim they'll need more data.

In practice the claimed efficacy of 90-95% for the US vaccines may not be different than the 70% one quoted for the Oxford/AZ trial. The Oxford trial gave participants a weekly PCR test and picked up asymptomatic cases; the US trials didn't.

Re. AstraZeneca trial results. @Jefferies Equity Research notes US trials (Pfizer, Moderna) only tested symptomatic cases, while AZ undertook weekly swabs of all triallists. This is potentially very significant. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/T1fq76viSB

I have been wondering. Give that they had 130 cases of covid in total, is the difference between the two trial doses statistically significant?

But don't they say 90% effective when just a half dose given as the first jab? So even cheaper.

It appears that may be based on very few cases so wide confidence intervals. They seem to be doing the right thing by focusing on the overall 70% (though, as is my usual complaint, it would be even better if they released the numbers)

"A vaccine that is 70% effective in the real world is still good enough to reach herd immunity" This might be less true in the USA where vaccines have huge potential to be political issues leading to a relatively low vaccination coverage.
