At the shops today, so thought I'd take a look at all of the "immune" supplements in the nonsense aisle They are all so ridiculous, it's amazing

Look at this beauty. Immune support, packed with anti-oxidants! Except it's just a bit of elderberry, some zinc and vitamin C. Some evidence that this might reduce cold symptoms, but that's about allpic.twitter.com/jsodSjBDan

Another one which adds a couple of vitamins and some echinacea. Again, can't see how this "supports the immune system to fight illness" unless you've got a vitamin D deficiencypic.twitter.com/5anS8Qtayq

Hello immunity! Or, in this case, zinc and vitamin C, but rebranded as a miracle cure of some kindpic.twitter.com/WYh38t99fz

An immune probiotic! And based on scientific evidence (which, from a scan, looks pretty equivocal)pic.twitter.com/wQrdIthyMM

An assortment of more things. It all melds into one giant nonsense eventually I thinkpic.twitter.com/62qkhf6hG3

One thing I was struck by tho was just how similar most of these products were. They were almost all just vitamin C+D and zinc, +/- some herb, repackaged as an immune formula and sold for twice as much

Honestly, seems to me that you could get the exact same stuff as most of these pills by buying the cheapest multivitamin on the shelf, so if you're going to get anything that's what I'd recommend

Also, I'm very much in favour of putting exactly what the studies showed on all of these ridiculous products, because saying "may reduce cold symptoms in 6-11 yos by 5%" is much less compelling than "immune support"

And for the love of actual science, PLEASE stop reporting studies that show only p, not effect size, as “significant.” Yes, it’s the worst named statistical variable, and that’s saying something.

Met someone recently who has a friend that believes high dose Vitamin C will cure *terminal* leukaemia...speechless...where are our education systems failing for adults to believe this sort of harmful nonsense?? 😔

I wonder how much of an economic boom the vitamin/supplement industry is seeing with the pandemic? Non 😷ers spending $$$ on supplements that can also be harmful. 🤦🏼‍♀️

In June I bought my first batch of masks at the local pharmacy. Tried to sell me red seaweed ointment for my nostrils that supposedly prevents germs entering. Also told the mouth naturally kills all bacteria meaning it can’t enter by the throat. I was outraged & complained.

We've something actually called 'feel immune' by Jumbo, a supermarket chain in the Netherlands. https://www.jumbo.com/jumbo-ice-tea-feel-immune-500ml/368090PAK/ … Green ice tea with some vitamines, seleen and zinc to 'help/assists the immune system'.

I always make it clear how disappointed most clinicians were when there was no clear vitamin C benefit vs common cold etc. If it had, we'd be shouting from the rooftops. Alas..... Policy should be written to update reality.
