@GidMK I asked if on acct of all the excess deaths skewed to people over age 80, avg life expectancy might paradoxically go up this year. You said no, that's not how it's calculated. Can i ask how it is calculated if not an average age of all that died excluding infant mortality.
It's avg years from birth->death, so if many people die at an older age the avg number of years will go down and life expectancy will too (simplified a lot)

Sorry I am not getting it. If enough people die older than the current avg life expectancy why won't that raise it? Extreme: If only 90 year-olds died in a given year, would average LE for the year be 90? I know there's a flaw i just can't see it.

Because it's calculated as an average of all years lived. So if people only live to 80 (because everyone over 80 dies), then the average will drop as many people still die in their 20s and 30s
