Me the health professional : “10,000 steps a day, while a very healthy goal, is arbitrary” Me off the clock: “6000 steps/day avg for the week - I am an absolute POS and unworthy of love”.

Me, the inveterate skeptic: 10,000 steps is no more meaningful than any other target, it's just a number picked by a Japanese marketing company in 1965

Me, the master of correlation, not causation: Japanese also have one of the longest life expectancies. What other truths do the Japanese marketing gurus of the 60’s know?

Me a pragmatist, any degree of exercise is beneficial, and if 10,000 steps gets people off their bottoms and moving then fine, if they are going to take up meaningless marketing slogans its better this than anything for Pete Evans or Goop.

You do know you can fool your watch/Fitbit/pedometer into thinking you have done more steps than you actually have... ?

Me, the pragmatist: 10,000 steps is about 8km, which would take at least an hour and a half, which is more than enough recommended daily physical activity for an average person.

Also me, the GP advising a patient: first, find out how many steps you take a day on average and then let’s aim to increase it in achievable increments (remember, sedentary people would be starting from ~3000 steps a day
