I disagree with this: "Masks probably won’t reduce your risk of infection by 50% or more” lab studies have shown that the level of protection varies significantly depending on the mask and fit. e.g. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2769443 … a fitted N95 mask will reduce your risk substantially

I think it's the one take-home from the trial that you can reasonably make. While it may have been a tad underpowered for even this finding, I think there's reasonable evidence now that a mask won't halve the risk for an average person

the Danish study used surgical masks. in the JAMA study I cited, surgical masks with ear loops were only 38% effective in filtering out 0.05 μm aerosols (which is admittedly too small a particle size to be looking at). KN95 masks were ~80% effective. my point: mask type matters

Maybe, but I think the effectiveness of surgical masks vs N95 in the community is unlikely to enormously modify the effect, given that <50% of people actually wear them as advised anyway

idk, on an evacuation flight from Italy to Korea in which all passengers were given N95 masks, 6 passengers tested positive upon landing, and there was only 1 transmission: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/11/20-3353_article … also, this German study had good results with N95 masks: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.28.20221580v1.full.pdf …

          N95 masks work.
