The fact this seems funny or surprising is a sad reflection on the current state of scientific debate on that topic: "Wow, this scientist doesn't think his study is necessarily the final word - AND he publicly takes a nuanced stance" All talkshow invitations cancelled...

No scientist would ever think that their study is the final word. That just isn't science. The study also acknowledged significant limitations.

They need not have bothered with their study because the effectiveness of masks has already been covered in China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand & other countries who've achieved low mortality. These graphics cover all that's needed to know...

I *just* read this study. They say throughout that it was full of holes, limitations, and reliance on unsupervised subjective reporting.

You would be surprised at the number of individuals that by inclination and training should have known better, would dutifully forward the email saying: "You never know! It might be true!!" and in the same breath, more infuriatingly adding: "we have nothing to lose by trying!".

What I'm getting from this kerfuffle is cloth masks are only marginally effective, but we've refused to admit it fearing lowered adoption, and in this false confidence failed to use the last 6 months to ramp up n95/Elastomeric production 2make them available 4everyone instead.

They studied whether a mask protects the wearer, not whether wearing one protects other people (which is the main purpose of recommending people wear masks) They also acknowledge various other limitations of their study.
