Thread is good but some of the comments are “angry?” This is so 2020 Lockdown = political School closure = lockdown Paper proposes closures are damaging Orthodoxy challenged The scrutiny machine is on It stands to reason school closures are bad, much more so to the less affluent

I find both of your tweets political that I may cancel both of you... School won’t open until the fall of 2021 regardless of the thousands of upcoming papers or previously published papers. @barttels2 approved my tweet.

Tbh, I think it is a mistake to try to nail the school closure debate to a wall with speculative “statistics” about any of these purported outcomes. There’s a debate here, for sure; and issues, huge. But these attempts try to apply math and certainties where few are, imo.

I couldn't agree more. I explicitly said in the thread that this does not mean that closing schools is a good thing, merely that this attempt to quantify the impact of such closures was enormously flawed

Generally, I think trying to use YLL to cost school closures is a flawed metric, because without mistakes such as are in this paper you will probably find that few years of life are lost due to closing schools, but that doesn't mean that closures are good
