And how many of those were attributable to lockdown vs the epidemic itself?

I don't know, it depends how you define those headings, especially given that the epidemic caused the lockdowns. I expect that more research is needed to answer your question. But I'd be surprised if there were no deaths due to lockdown. Lockdown causes other problems too.

I tried to admit a couple of people with chest pain in April. They wouldn't go to A&E because they knew there was a lot of COVID at the hospital. They preferred to take their chances at home. I don't believe it was lockdown per se that put people off attending A&E, more the virus

Plus there were heart attacks and strokes that turned out to be due to COVID rather than the usual disease processes.

I had plenty of people refuse referral for cancer investigation too. The referral was offered, the investigations were available (no "closed" NHS as some allege) but they preferred to stay at home with the uncertainty of cancer than risk catching the virus by going to hospital.

Had there been no lockdown, the hospitals would have been even more saturated with COVID patients and the fear of attending would have been worse.

That is an excellent point. So perhaps when lockdown is cited as causing a death, it has to be the actual cause. Again, difficult to prove or define. Suicide from depression worsened by isolation, or a business failure? Maybe things will eventually be quantified.

Suicide is one thing that definitely hasn't increased in most places this year, interestingly

Yes that's odd. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an increase once delays (coroners' reports) have worked through.

No this is after coroner's have certified. The information for Melbourne, with the longest lockdown, comes directly from the coroner's report. There is no strong, immediate association between lockdown and suicide

Ok, thanks. Must admit, quite surprising.
