The idea that Aussies are super compliant to public health regulations is HILARIOUS for those of us who work in public health in Australiahttps://twitter.com/MackayIM/status/1327414620970053633 …

I wrote a long reply featuring jokes about kangaroos and shrimps on barbies and spiders the size of coffee tables. And then I deleted it. You’re welcome.

That whole pivot to Asia thing that NZ and Australia went through in the 90s clearly paid off with an adoption of Confucian culture we never knew had happened.

I thought all Australians were 100% compliant with public health ordinances, they all look and sound like Paul Hogan, and everyone has a pet kangaroo or koala bear or both. Are you telling me none of these things are true?

Ahem. British Australian here. You have _no idea_ how compliant Australians are in comparison with Brits. Australians to a FAR greater extent are models of good behaviour where public health is concerned. I think it comes from a heritage of living in an unforgiving environment.

You obey the public health and safety rules (bushfires, floods, droughts, cyclones, mouse plagues) or you die. And you pull together as one, or none of you survive. It’s become ingrained.
