Broke: public health experts are very left wing Woke: left wing parties tend to support policies that are good for public health, the experts are pretty mercenary about improving health

I know epidemiologists who worked with right wing parties across the world to get salt iodized and other shit done, it's just that generally the politicians who care about public health are left wing 🤷‍♂️

It's classic individual vs collective rights. Left wing tends to think that since we're all paying for public healthcare, we restrict people who might cost a lot to everyone. Right says me, myself and I pay for insurances, i have the right to do what i want.

And in the United States, the Right has embraced anti-science stances. You have to go far-Left in order to final similar stances on the other side (mostly anti-vax & related). I think this started with climate change in the 90's but that could just be me showing my age.

All the major political parties in Australia have enacted and supported tobacco control reforms, and no ‘mainstream’ politician wants to cosy up to Big Tobacco either.

One of the best talks I ever went to was on "advocating for social and health measures to conservative governments". Run by some ex NSW+WA state staffers, some of the stuff was so obvious once laid out.

Principle#2 of Ostrich Epidemiology - Public Health Systems are a waste of money and Corollary #2.1 - Contracting PH to private companies is more efficient (and enriches our donors)
