If I was in charge of the universe, I would never let anyone write, "To our knowledge, this was the first..." in their papers. Ever. Your research was either well designed to answer an important question, or it wasn't. Talk about that instead. The rest is just for show.

Imo it's more about the ratio of methods+results:intro+discussion

The length of the intro is just indicative of how much space I need to slip to get to methods.

Tbh a 4 paragraph limit to the intro is inhumane, how else will I fit in 20+ self citations?

I have found it challenge to cite some of my old papers in my intros. Perhaps I should publish on a more narrow set of topics.

Just cite them in a block, I would bet money that no one will notice if you insert an extra citation or two into (4-8)
