To a great extent, I think this is because people have consistently been sold herd immunity as an end to the pandemic, even if that doesn't really make sense

The point is, even if we were to decrease the fatality rate of COVID to the level of the common cold, if cases are still increasing it's not population/herd immunity

To put it another way, no one describes us as having herd immunity to the common cold, so it makes no sense to talk about a situation where COVID-19 becomes less lethal in those terms

So if deaths *do* decrease, whilst cases *continue* to increase, in the absence of a vaccine, and no firm timeline on it's arrival, nor guarantee of an effective one ever arriving.....this is a bad thing how exactly?

Also herd immunity considered by many to be ezplicitly a concept applying to vaccination programmes.... ....otherwise its called getting sick in big numbers. Hardly a public health concept....
