Pet peeve about fiction, especially YA fiction: setting it in a city or university you don’t know well enough. If you’re going to set something in Austin and/or at UT, you’d BETTER know both REALLY well. Just finished a book that did. Reading one now that definitively DOESN’T.

I have not. Noted! I just finished Red, White & Royal Blue by
@casey_mcquiston. It was fantastic & SUCH a balm right now. But more importantly to me, she KNOWS Austin, UT & Texas, or DEFINITELY did her research, especially wrt politics & Texas culture, which I really appreciated. -
Currently reading a different YA book, a lighthearted romance, set in Austin at UT. Dorm names are made up! She calls
@AustinChronicle the “paper of record.” Uh, the Chronicle is the alt rag &@statesman is the paper of record. And she doesn’t have the vibe of Austin AT ALL. - Show replies
