No one really wants to implement harsh restrictions, but as we've now seen many times largely ignoring the pandemic doesn't really work either

Worse still, we now know from numerous examples that controlling cases is possible without such harsh restrictions if you enact measures (testing/tracing/isolation, distancing etc) early enough

Nobody is proposing zero action. It's about proportionality, and understanding that public health policy does not exist in a vacuum.

I strongly disagree. The Great Barrington petition, for example, has some very vague language about protecting the elderly, but basically proposes eliminating all government restrictions entirely

The most ironic thing about this virus is that it almost exacerbates Darwinism. The young: resist restrictions on their desire to socialise and meet a mate. This at the expense of the weak and vulnerable.....

Yes - this is nature. It is exceedingly difficult for society as a whole to maintain these measures for an unknown duration. At some point, most humans will choose to be selfish, over miserable. At some point the vulnerable will take greater risks, rather than being miserable.
