      1) Piers has a secure, well paid job. 2) He has nothing to lose from lockdown. 3) So long as we only focus on COVID-19, he will always be able to say “I told you so”. 4) The same is true of everyone on SAGE. And Keir Starmer. 5) That’s the reality.pic.twitter.com/D4nNO2fWM0

Chris, if a lot of people get very ill it will affect the economy too. I don't think a full lockdown is ideal for lots of reasons but we need to find a way to slow the number of cases. I think we should be doing everything possible to keep schools open. Masks, ventilation etc.

We’ve just had new rules introduced tonight. People like Morgan don’t want to give them a chance because they’re lockdown junkies.

I'm certainly not a lockdown junkie, but I do find myself in the astonishing position of having to agree with Piers Morgan. There is fairly good evidence at this point that the economic impact of uncontrolled viral spread is probably worse than that of a well-implemented lockdown

How many cases/hospital admissions does there need to be to trigger a lockdown in the U.K. in your opinion?

Honestly I haven't run the numbers so it's hard to be specific, but the most effective lockdowns were those implemented early in the spring

Without criteria for locking down it just looks like a cycle of blind panic to me. At one time the rationale was to prevent healthcare systems being overrun but even that seems to have gone out of the window.

Oh I'm not defending the UK government. I think if there's one thing that's irrefutable it's that the govt has manifestly failed to take meaningful action either to prevent a lockdown or even to instate one properly now. Inaction is not a strategy

And you're definitely correct to say that the govt should've set meaningful criteria for what would trigger further restrictions. It's madness that in 6 months there's been apparently no planning for what would happen if cases came back
