People have been tagging me a lot in Vitamin D for COVID-19 articles, and as far as I can tell the evidence is still pretty much what it was when I wrote this months ago:https://medium.com/the-method/should-you-take-a-vitamin-d-supplement-for-covid-19-63d922f24953 …

"At this point in time, we really have no idea if supplementation is helpful or harmful in this case" True in May. Remarkably, still mostly true in September

If there's a study I've missed, please let me know, but thus far we have one tiny, poorly controlled randomized trial, and a bucket of similar epidemiological studies with not much else

This is a real shame, because after 6 months it would be pretty trivial to have a good RCT of vitamin D supplementation but we have to work with what we've got and what we've got is not sufficient for any kind of definite answer

The only thing that's changed since I wrote the piece is a new RCT that is, well, a bit problematichttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1303559372149108736?s=20 …

I thought I'd look at this paper in a little bit more detail because, well, there are some pretty big issues Let's do some peer-review on twitter! https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1303539430024568832 …

I take it for 10th month in a row now. First it was for dark Estonian winter, then quarantine, where I sit at home all the time and don't see any sun. Didn't know people hype it as one of the magic COVID cures.

What did you think of this study https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0239252 …? Purely correlational of course, so doesn't prove much, could just be that vitamin D is a biomarker of good health or something... But just keen to know your thoughts...

That's just not a great study. They only controlled for a handful of confounders, and dichotomized them all. Not great statistical practice!
