It is incredibly frustrating to see people using low death rates from COVID-19 in younger age groups to argue that we can relax all restrictions as long as we protect the elderly without putting forward CONCRETE PROPOSALS about how to do that 1/n

7/n Because if the last 6 months have shown us anything, it's that stopping older people from getting COVID-19 is REALLY NOT EASY Saying "protect the elderly" doesn't cut it

8/n And, of course, this is ignoring any impacts aside from death If there are substantial chronic impacts in the younger population - a definite possibility - then the situation gets even more complicated

9/n I've written about potential long-term impacts even for young people, they are a real worry and potentially enormously problematic even if the death rate is lowhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/commentisfree/2020/jul/13/as-covid-19-persists-around-the-world-death-is-not-the-only-outcome-to-fear …

I feel like a lot of people really don't understand the exponential growth of viruses. They can't conceive that the only difference between a few odd cases and thousands infected is a couple of weeks free reign.

And even if we *could* do that, it essentially means locking them away from society, including their own children and grandchildren, for years. What sort of a plan is that?

Sixty year olds are still required to go to work. They don’t qualify for unemployment benefits if they just stop working in order to protect themselves. Workplaces aren’t required to give them separate spaces free from younger people. How are 60+ populations protected?

Precisely. Because those who are elderly and most vulnerable are also the most likely to need in-person support from younger people. Where does the "steel ring of protection" end?

the assumption that those under 60+ are not at risk is erroneous: 37% of
#shielding clinically extremely vulnerable group are aged under 60 and more than half are aged under 70. There are additionally far more people under 70 identified as clinically vulnerable, same risk as 70+Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
