can anyone explain to us the way the obligatory voting law works in Australia?

Getting on the electoral roll is easy. Polling places are readily available, as is pre-poll voting and postal voting. You can vote out of district. It is easier to vote than deal with the non-voting fine notice.

Also, voting is on a weekend and takes minutes. Voting often held at communal places, and the actual experience of voting is quite fun, with BBQs and sandwiches on sale in many places

Important point - I always wonder about other countries, where voting is on a week day. Very inconvenient for workers. So much easier to vote near to where you live - vote, then off to the shops.

The Malaysian government did precisely that for the 2018 election. Polling day has always been on Saturdays but to discourage the public from voting, they moved the polling day to a Wednesday, a work day. Massive number of voters still turned up though.

The polling places are often communal places, such as public schools, who hold a fete or bake sale or BBQs as a fundraiser
