can anyone explain to us the way the obligatory voting law works in Australia?

Important point - I always wonder about other countries, where voting is on a week day. Very inconvenient for workers. So much easier to vote near to where you live - vote, then off to the shops.

The Malaysian government did precisely that for the 2018 election. Polling day has always been on Saturdays but to discourage the public from voting, they moved the polling day to a Wednesday, a work day. Massive number of voters still turned up though.

The polling places are often communal places, such as public schools, who hold a fete or bake sale or BBQs as a fundraiser
