This is, I think, one of those few times when the RELATIVE change between two numbers gives you a better idea of the situation than the ABSOLUTE one In 2000, there were 46 hate crimes against Islamic people in the U.S. In 2001, that increased by 1000% to 550 hate crimeshttps://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1305237645459628044 …

Let me give you that bar graph again. The post-9/11 upsurge in hate crimes against Muslims was real and unforgivable, but the horrible truth is that it didn’t loom that large compared with what Blacks face year in and year out. 9/ pic.twitter.com/Wrnt8xQnZJ

To put it another way, the Islamic community in the U.S. experienced 4 hate crimes per 100,000 in the year 2000, and 50 hate crimes per 100,000 in 2001 That's a pretty major increase by any measure

I agree hate crimes are not acceptable, but post 9/11 I'm hard pushed to say it wasn't understandable they rose, seeing what we know of people being quick to anger, many being of low educational status etc, and the 2,977 innocents killed, and >6000 injured in a terror attack

It's also important to understand what these crimes reflect, animosity and hate speech, or violence and worse? Lots of bad feeling towards the Japanese in the UK immediately post WWII after maltreatment of prisoners of war. Softened now, but still some won't forgive
