I suggest you tweet out that second claim on its own to get wider feedback on that (as a fellow academic let me say I consider it completely absurd!). As for your second point: when I say ignoring herd immunity,...

It is a factual claim, with evidencehttps://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/not-immune-universities-prepare-for-more-job-losses-20200716-p55csp.html …

I don't know what is going on at your University in particular. The point is that the personal economic situations of academics are unlikely to be reflective of the challenges faced by those most affected by the COVID response! 1/2

Again, it is a factual claim with evidence. Universities are one of the most hard-hit areas of the economy in Australia, and one of the biggest places for job loss. This is, I believe, also true in the States, although I'm not as familiar

Please provide me with this evidence that the largest change in socioeconomic status over the next year or two will occur in academics.

That is not the claim I made. You explicitly mentioned job losses, which academics are one of the most vulnerable groups for thus far

What I said is that since proposals will be "economically ruinous" for many people, this view that one should "pay" for one's viewpoints with self-harming actions which seem related to the viewpoint would prescribe economic self-harm (e.g. give up your job) for academics.

Anyways if you don't like this analogy that's fine. As long as you don't think people should seriously pay for their viewpoints in this way.

Ah, I see. You have not seen jokes on twitter before. I was not seriously suggesting that anyone actually infect themselves, this would be a terrible thing to do

While I didn't think it was a serious suggestion, I didn't see it as a joke either. The point is that I think there is actually a serious and important question here which this downplays in a unhelpful way.

I mean, it's quite obviously sarcasmhttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal …

This "I was only joking!" line is textbook gaslighting and a favorite tactic of the alt-Right. I wouldn't recommend adopting it.
