Herd immunity: 1) a strategy via vaccination where nobody is required to get sick 2) or let people get the disease so that they become immune to a disease that they have to get in order to be immune to it...bonus natural selection too with option 2.

It seems they had some "success" inoculating people with what could be small doses of milder (though still dangerous) strains, with viruses sometimes weakened by additives or storage. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variolation … A bit similar to vaccination, but less standardized and more hazardous.
