Another IFR point estimate. Here from Iceland, based on 10 deaths. Variability is expected from sample to sample, population to population. Recall that the criticism of Ioannidis’ meta-analysis was the exclusion of higher yet valid IFR estimates. Also, why turn off the comments?https://twitter.com/VPrasadMDMPH/status/1300915247176323073 …

I would never have guessed that IFR would become one of the most controversial topics of 2020 The IFR in today's @NEJM publication of the Iceland experience was 0.3% https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa2026116?articleTools=true … The IFR in the preprint meta-analysis by satan was 0.27% 🤷‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/arz3cCKRvA

The sampling methodology in this study was also not ideal - the convenience sample used could drive up the prevalence estimate. Hard to get around this sort of systematic biaspic.twitter.com/gXd2ayWCVp

I was also trying to figure out what the deal with this sampling scheme. There is barely any description of it in the methods section. That seems to be absolutely critical if you're going to measure IFR or similar.

Yes it's a bit of a headache. I'm not sure you can readily calculate IFR from a sample consisting mostly of people who attended healthcare but didn't test PCR+ and people quarantining after coming into the country

The "I am the great and powerful large sample; do not look at the sampling scheme behind the curtain" approach to population representative statistics really needs to stop. Who reviewed this?

In this case, it is truly quite an impressive sample (10% of the WHOLE COUNTRY) but I agree even that doesn't really overcome the bias!

You folks need to stop reading methods, it makes life easier.

A whole country with a remarkably homogeneous genetic population of 300 050 spread over 100 000 sqkm i.e. 14% of Brooklyn's population on an area 12 500 % larger than all of NYC. What exactly does that tell anybody?https://www.wired.com/2015/03/iceland-worlds-greatest-genetic-laboratory/ …
