I imagine there will be many examples soon of places where mask mandates were enacted that nevertheless had large outbreaks. There will probably soon be research arguing that they are useless This wouldn't be such a big issue if they hadn't been sold as a silver bullet!

It's just an annoying aspect of how the discourse is framed. If you argue MASKS WORK ALWAYS AND TOTALLY, then you'll inevitably be tripped up

I mean, the IHME model has, for weeks now, argued that masks could save 10,000s of lives in the U.S. I wonder if they'll reconfigure that to a more realistic estimate

The US is a bin fire. Has been for months. At least locally, the messaging around masks, once they were mandated, was that they were a low cost response that had some, but not sufficient effect, on transmission.
-
Where is your evidence they don't have sufficient effect on transmission to help control the pandemic?

I'm working retail, all masked up... It's baffling how many people don't wear masks properly, or wear the same mask every day, or don't practice distancing or hand washing because the mask gives a false sense of security. Masks probably do work, in theory?

Surely you mean it will end somewhere on the continuum from good to bad?
Turns out people are situationally more or less adept at counterfactual thinking, and for complex (i.e. most) issues, we focus on 1 particular dimension, so e.g. neglect secular trends. Researchers, too! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
