But honest mistakes can still be negligent or incompetent. Also, at some point, failing to admit a mistake does become lying and deceitful.

Sadly it's required of politicians or the press eat them alive I personally respect people who can change course when presented with evidence and admit past errors

I'll add to that. Acknowledging you were wrong and changing your thinking when you are presented with new information that is in conflict to mistaken beliefs doesn't make you lying or deceitful either.
