Do you have in mind any observational study which could prove that masks work by going beyond simple compatibility with the hypothesis?

It would be hard to prove, but at this point there are enough natural experiments that I suspect you could have a really good go

Masks are such an odd thing for us Americans that, right now, I would argue that it is more likely they serve as a reminder that we SHOULD social distance. I have absolutely no data to support my contention, lol.
