William Shockley's racism introduced me to the fact that Nobel awards prizes for very narrow achievements. People's opinions are broad. That leaves wide room for grievous errors. Linus Pauling's vitamin C claims, roughly the same era, sealed that.

Excess mortality was way down, but a lot of that was the lockdown preventing normal deaths from reduced auto traffic etc. As the lockdown has eased, the normal causes are returning along with the covid ramp up and all cause is once more ramping.pic.twitter.com/gQI1hq6Ity

Why? Unless the Nobel was in virology I see no reason to be surprised. Knowledge in one area is not the same as knowledge in all areas (this really needs to be said more, obvious though it sounds).
