But if the pile of leftover samples in the freezer is from different types of screenings then you could get shifts in biases that make interpreting even trends very difficult. I don't see a replacement for at least semi-randomized sampling (e.g. NYC's grocery store sampling).

True, it's only useful insofar as the sample remains constant. If they take the frozen samples in the same way over time, I'd say that's useful
