Am I right when I say that (widespread use of) masks affects R--that is, roughly the basis of an exponential--so whatever benefit gets ampliefied disporoportionally?

I watched a Tesla engineer, wearing a mask, present an in-house respirator build. He adjusted his mask, fingers on the material under the nose. He then proceeded to touch the machine's buttons. Difficult to compare the risks vs benefits of the mask in this scenario, as others.

I think of this scenario when I think of food preparation workers wearing masks. It seems to me that experiments interrogating such situations are much more practical than testing masks in general use.

Yes! Not a silver bullet...evidence is weak at best for non N95/P2s, but will likely not harm you...& best to not forget to distance + wash hands + most of all stay home

Am I right in understanding that the evidence discussed is about benefit to the mask wearer (primary outcome is self-reported illness)? A lot of the discussion surrounding masks is the benefit to others, particularly in the pre-symptomatic period. Much harder to RCT that!

You'd find a lot of skepticism in Italy that masks are only of "modest benefit." People would wonder if you'd studied Italy, or whether these conclusions were based on lab work or one-off events. Handwashing is an Italian norm and contagion didn't drop until masks were added.
