Pretty sure that the signatories to a letter somewhat define its message. Not saying that's the only issue, but given the timing it certainly gave the letter a very strong meaning

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. Rowling didn’t write any of it. How does her signing of it change its meaning? And if it does, what about the meaning that comes from the other signatories?

Given the context, I think it's pretty obvious what getting Rowling to sign a letter calling for an end to censoriousness in society might imply

That Rowling doesn’t want censoriousness? You’re back to your starting point: that the signatories’ sole concern is themselves.

Not at all. As you've repeatedly pointed out, context is key - if you present a letter signed by someone who is currently facing consequences for their political stance, and call for an end to such consequences, it's hardly a long bow to connect the two

If Rowling was the only signatory, sure. But one of 153 - a very diverse group? Why does Rowling overwhelm THAT context?

I think part of them problem is the timing and that the letter is so very vague. There's basically no substance to the arguments, which means we are forced to infer the meaning from context

Sure. But not just one signature? And as I’ve noted, the letter references half a dozen specific examples that are widely discussed and have nothing whatsoever to do with Rowling. (I appreciate you didn’t get those references initially.)

Right, but that's part of the problem. The references were so absurdly vague that they really could've meant anything. And there's really no specific remedy suggested, just a vague call to allow more open debate

That’d be fair if the letter was written for Aussie immunologists. But it’s not. It’s written by mainly American authors/journos and used examples that are very well known in America, especially the media types it’s directed to.
