But they're not really speaking up for these people - they're an offhand comment in the broader point which is the chilling risk of these powerful individuals not having the platform that they currently enjoy

There's no campaign to re-hire people, no investment in a legal fund to defend them, just a ridiculous letter decrying the horrors of "cancellation"

Offhand? The letter is three paragraphs long. The first is mostly about racism/Trump. Half of the second is what I quoted. The third says: "The restriction of debate... invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation."
