Just throwing this number out there to all the 99% boosters, Murdoch's Sky News hacks Alan Jones, Andrew Bolt, Paul Murray who constantly push the line that the response to Coronavirus is overblown. 99% of people DONT recover currently 4.325% are dying in the US #Auspolpic.twitter.com/uKOXsenfBL

I am no statistician but believe that is not the death rate.

The IFR can't be calculated in that way because the more serious somebody's case the more likely they are to be tested, thus making the observed fatality rate much higher than actual. Best calculated from prevalence studies.

Except of course all the deaths where they dont test, damn lies and statistics you can make them say almost anything or nothing.

... so all us medical researchers and epidemiologists should give up then? @GidMK pack up, go home, nothing to see here.

Two points: 1) our best estimate of the infection-fatality rate puts it around 0.7% 2) this does not mean that 99.3% of people are not harmed by the disease. Focusing only on fatality alone ignores the innumerable other issues (ICU stays, chronic sequelae etc)

So I disagree with the number at the start of this thread (no, it's not 4.3%), but I think the broader point, that many more people are harmed than die, is very important

The Covid experience & lasting health problems described in this interview, whilst not a research paper, highlights the issue is greater than just the raw numbers we pulled out largely in response to the constant sniping that 99% are not effected.https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/lifematters/travel-refunds,-karls-battle-with-covid-19-and-brain-on-nature/12437462 …
