Really wish people in the medical community would stop making bold claims like this and then a few tweets down say, “This is observational and small but reflects both symptomatic & asymptomatic people.” A lot of people won’t read the little disclaimer you’re putting out to CYAhttps://twitter.com/ASlavitt/status/1278088607551586306 …

Then, the stubborn people see the bold claim and say, “Well, what’s the point then of wearing a mask and staying inside?” I’m so tired of the bold claims when they are small studies or aren’t peer-reviewed. People don’t know what to believe and it creates panic.

I wish they wouldn’t report studies unless they have the data to back it up or have a huge, flashing disclaimer that it’s only initial data. It all feels like dirty clickbait to me.

I really want to know what
@GidMK thinks about this. Maybe I’m missing something? It just feels like every day there’s a small study scaring people and then two days later it’s disproven or you never hear about it again. It’s just too much.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -

The tweet is silly. The study is interesting, and has potentially worrying implications for long-term immunity to COVID-19 that we need to further investigate

Are you seeing things like this in your media? It’s like this every day multiple times a day where we hear these crazy claims and they sometimes fuel the misinformation.

I thought the medical community was supposed to report on things when they have enough data, not this weird horror movie we’re living in where people half-ass a study and then treat it like it’s the gospel?

I think the study itself is reasonable - this is preliminary data, but worth looking at. The reporting on it is awful tho, it's not a certainty it's something that wee need to investigate further

If I were you, seeing this stuff would exhaust me to death. We see so much of this every day and not everyone can see it for what it is.

It has been exhausting, but we do what we can. I've really enjoyed @CT_Bergstrom @angie_rasmussen @MackayIM @SaskiaPopescu and others discussion of studies like these, it's been amazing to see the public communication of really finicky science this year on twitter
