This simple point should be uncontroversial. But it makes the folks at TGA Australia (Therapeutic Goods Administration) sweat.
If a product makes 'low risk claims', it can be approved as 'Listed' (marked Aust L) by TGA. Don't need to prove jack shit. Sell
oil, rake

The problem is collecting evidence costs a lot of money. Most of these products are out of patent so there is no way of recouping the cost. A demand for evidence is a defacto ban.

Many of them have been sold without evidence for decades. At a certain point, after billions of dollars in sales, the lack of any evidence whatsoever becomes an industry choice

It is an industry choice in that the alternative is to go out of business. If you want to ban these products then just be upfront about it. If people want to spend their money on harmless products of no value this should be their choice.

They are sold with the promise of efficacy, and none of them are entirely harmless. And that's simply nonsense - there's an easy path to continuing business, these products are worth billions

Nothing is entirely harmless. What is this easy path? Look at what happened with the FDA. They tried this (demand evidence) and the political blowback saw them lose control of all regulation. I do not want to see a repeat here in Australia.

The right path is never the simple one when the problem is complex. This is really hard problem and it hasn’t arisen because the TGA are fools or crooks.

Eh, what a load of straw men. Tedious non-arguments, I never said nor implied any of that

That is the problem. You offered no solution other than a unworkable one with many bad consequences and a worthless platitude about right paths.

Nonsense. The fact that the solution is obvious doesn't make it simple, and the fact that it is necessary doesn't make it unworkable

There are a lot of problems in healthcare regulation we wouldn't have solved if the solution wasn't immediately obvious and we disengaged.

There are many more where the solution is far from obvious. I am not suggesting disengagement, just that this is not one of those problems with an easy solution.
