COVID-19 deaths and comparisons to influenza in the US: <10,000 - "it's not as bad as the flu in the US" 10,-60,000 - "it's the same as the flu in the US" 60,000+ - "it's not as bad as the flu...worldwide"

Of note, the average number of deaths from influenza worldwide over the course of 12 months is ~350,000, so we passed that some time ago The average number of flu deaths in the US is ~40,000, which is about a third of the current number from COVID-19

And worth remembering that those flu death averages are over 12 months, while COVID-19 has only been around in most places for a quarter of that time

I’d like your take on this opinion piece - I’ve always been a little dubious of the “official” flu death totals - they seem ramped by people trying to sell tamiflu to government agencies. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/comparing-covid-19-deaths-to-flu-deaths-is-like-comparing-apples-to-oranges/ …

That piece is broadly correct. I don't think the CDC's flu numbers are 'wrong', per se, but reflect the challenge of accurately ascertaining causes of death

Thanks for your input-flu is undoubtedly a scourge in the nursing home every year, I’ve always looks at the flu death stats in Canada as being a bit of a catch all in this patient group-pneumonia/other resp viruses/pollution/COPD/undiagnosed CHF often getting lumped in with flu
