COVID-19 deaths and comparisons to influenza in the US: <10,000 - "it's not as bad as the flu in the US" 10,-60,000 - "it's the same as the flu in the US" 60,000+ - "it's not as bad as the flu...worldwide"

I guess most of covid-19 deaths are after + PCR result, but how much of the ~40,000 flu deaths are really lab-confirmed for influenza?
-
A small proportion. This is the other issue with these flu comparisons - those death figures are modeled estimates, while the COVID-19 deaths are individuals with clinical/PCR+ disease

I’d like your take on this opinion piece - I’ve always been a little dubious of the “official” flu death totals - they seem ramped by people trying to sell tamiflu to government agencies. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/comparing-covid-19-deaths-to-flu-deaths-is-like-comparing-apples-to-oranges/ …

That piece is broadly correct. I don't think the CDC's flu numbers are 'wrong', per se, but reflect the challenge of accurately ascertaining causes of death

1M people die every month from starvation. We never hear a peep about it.
-
You’re right and they are largely children. We do hear about it but not nearly at the intensity we should. Why? We’ve become acclimated? They are not from the West’s tribe? They are typically non-whites?

And without countermeasures... The countermeasures taken worldwide are without precedent...
