Ok. I've had my coffee and I think there are some things that need to be said about this @undarkmag piece It is, I think, thoroughly misleading and in many places wronghttps://twitter.com/stephaniemlee/status/1271152906935230464 …

Today @undark ran this op-ed defending John Ioannidis. The authors are entitled to their opinions. But it cites my story on the whistleblower complaint about his team's antibody survey, and doesn’t mention facts/context that I think are important. https://undark.org/2020/06/11/john-ioannidis-politicization/ …

Broadly speaking, it is a defense of John Ioannidis, who has come under fire for some academic decisions that many feel are a bit questionable

Ok, so Ioannidis has updated his preprint This is good - hats off to him for acknowledging issues and working to improve Let's see what's changed 1/n

Right off the bat, there are issues For example, the authors say that a fatality rate of 0.1% for COVID-19 would make it 10x more deadly than influenza This is untruepic.twitter.com/WgVYtGLnA3

This is a common error, and I explain more fully in this linked thread, but briefly you can't directly compare the modelled IFR of influenza to the crude calculation for COVID-19 If you make an apples/apples comparison, COVID is MUCH worsehttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1270490521291485185?s=20 …

          Health Nerd added,

18/n Here, Ioannidis is comparing the IFR of influenza used by the CDC - which is ~0.1% - to the IFR of COVID-19 inferred from seroprevalence studies These two figures, however, are not comparable

The piece continues inaccurately, with this statement The paper by Ioannidis was not a meta-analysis. There was no attempt to statistically aggregate estimates. By most definitions, it was also not a systematic review Technically, it was a narrative/literature reviewpic.twitter.com/rhYg6hpSjt

The authors also say that the Santa Clara study was "singled out" for "pointed attacks", without noting that the CDC estimate quoted DIRECTLY ABOVE has been similarly criticized many times That's...a bit misleading imo

And then this paragraph, which alludes to issues with specificity without really understanding them Yes, low-prevalence areas can be an issue, but not all seroprevalence surveys have been done in low-prevalence areas!pic.twitter.com/q5Uxdj9sEU

For example, the New York City seroprevalence is estimated at 22.7% Bergamo is >50% With these numbers, the IFR is 0.5-1%, and with no substantial issues in terms of specificity

Firstly, this is all posed as some vague academic dispute IT IS NOTHING OF THE SORT At this moment in time, academics with huge influence can quite literally decide whether millions of people live or die

Presenting this whole debacle as "just asking questions" or as some kind of vague academic dispute about correctness is, imo, really missing the point

Ioannidis has, by my count, appeared on more than a dozen national US TV shows, had a Youtube video with millions of hits, has been in print another dozen times, and has written two lengthy editorials If that's silencing, sign me up
