If you're wondering how you can enjoy Harry Potter given the issues with the author, may I refer you to Roland Barthes: "there is no other time than that of the utterance, and every text is eternally written here and now."pic.twitter.com/3DMNXZVXZi

Essentially, you get to decide on the meaning of whatever you are reading as you read it, so ignore the author and take what you will from the books

I should clarify - this is not meant to excuse the behaviour nor dissociate the works from the author, more that if you find meaning in the novels you can hold on to that while still feeling upset/outraged over Rowling's opinions

I wouldn't assume this book has anything to say about listening to someone like R. Kelly?

How convenient. Note that the people she targeted likely won't have the choice to ignore their own feelings, and the people most likely to be able get past it, to ignore the author and enjoy the book will be those who weren't targeted in the first place.

I'd rather have people acknowledge that the author is problematic and sit with that discomfort while reading (or not) the book.

Jk Rowlings tweets are such a non issue. I will continue to like her and read her books. Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one. I also agree with her. 🤷🏻‍♀️

An interesting take. But also a difficult one for me. I have had correspondence many times with people where I asked for clarification. And they really meant something different than I interpreted. Of course, I can insert MY meaning, but does that not dilute messages?

I mean, just as a take: Lets assume a dystopian novel. Guns are a theme. The story has a diverse point of view, from personal defense to the destruction of lives. And someone takes a part of it and says: "Yes, it means this polar view! My interpretation!"
