What has been the biggest goof up by the WHO about COVID19? 1) No human: human transmission 2) Masks not helpful 3) No asx transmission 4) Other (comment)

I think this is pretty obvious - 1 and 2 were based on current best evidence, and have been updated regularly as new evidence has emerged. 3 was an unfortunate miscommunication that was not evidence-based

      Pretty generous take.

Dunno, I think how you've phrased the question is a bit unfair lol. Don't think the WHO ever said, for example, that masks were useless, just that current best evidence doesn't support mass masking as an intervention to combat the disease outbreak

Had to be succinct to fit in a poll. They made a call that led people to delay widespread use of masks. They still were upgrading recs to more widespread use of masks only a few days ago. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/06/who-updates-guidance-on-masks-heres-what-to-know-now/ …

Sure, but that's the problem with polls! And yes, but the point is not "what was the effect" it's "were they making the call based on best evidence" surely? There will be many issues that are, in hindsight, easy to criticize, but that's not the same thing I think

So while both the masks and human/human spread are defensible - based on knowledge at the time - the call about asymptomatic transmission was a clear error and has been acknowledged as such

how were 1 and 2 not errors of “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”? They shouldn’t have confidently declared things they didn’t have enough evidence for (or against for that matter). And what is the primary new evidence that appeared in the mean time?

Because they didn't say that there was no transmission or that masks didn't work, they just said that current best evidence hadn't found these to be true. Nuances that often were missed in the reporting!

Press reporting was not great. But it’s not like the WHO is new to the game. They should know how to communicate better to a large audience (“the world”). Also, how was this a fact? Maybe they didn’t have enough evidence to call it “airborne”, but not to call it “not airborne”pic.twitter.com/NPS3WdGSiZ

The ideal way to report "absence of evidence" would be to say "insufficient evidence to support or refute efficacy of masks". i.e. equivalent of USPTFS grade "I".pic.twitter.com/TAMQdzluRC
