Because I don't think the authors or Surgisphere are claiming that the public health authorities "sent" them data specifically for this study. Their system automatically integrates data from all of their participating hospitals.

I think this is pretty clear in terms of the state data. Neither Vic not NSW provided data to the database - extracted or automatedpic.twitter.com/9IZhqIjCbG

But also, I feel like I haven't explained well. Individual Aussie hospitals are owned and operated by the states, so if the state health department says they don't use the database they mean none of the hospitals do either

Yes, that's the thing I'm trying to understand (from across the world and in a different healthcare system). In the US, a hospital could join such a "collaborative" and provide their data without the "state health department" having any say in the matter.

Nah they couldn't here. Private hospitals could, but there aren't that many and they haven't treated any COVID cases (many don't have ICUs)

Yeah, so this is definitely a key point in understanding. If it's known that the private hospitals from Oz that could have joined such an initiative haven't treated any COVID cases, it at least points to questions about reliability of the data.

As my understanding of this whole thing evolves, I just want to make clear that I believe that "a database exists" and that "an analysis was done" (e.g. I don't think we're looking at a fraud here). I do think the questions about reliability are an issue.

And questions like this do bring up reasonable "can we really trust the results of this analysis" (e.g. are we sure that the COVID cases in the dataset are really COVID cases, are we sure that they're correctly identifying HCQ and non-HCQ treated patients, do we have faith in...

...the data on comorbidities that is used in an effort to risk-adjust the estimates of HCQ treatment effect) and so on.

For example: if the only hospitals from Oz that are part of this collaborative are private hospitals, and you know that very few if any COVID cases have been treated at private hospitals, that casts some doubt on whether the database correctly identifies COVID cases.

My guess is that all the hospitals that are classified as Australia aren't actually Aussie, which raises very serious questions about the data quality for the rest of the data
