I’m not familiar with the structure of Aussie hospitals, but I do see Joshua’s point here. In the type of database that is being described, it’s not like data is “sent” to the database in response to a query for it - it’s all automatically integrated.

So the data could theoretically be included in the database without, say, the local public health ministry “sending” it to Surgisphere. But, Gid is saying that all Aussie hospitals are public, and doesn’t seem to believe this would be allowed. Is that right?

I'm saying that in the article the public authorities specifically say they aren't doing that

But would a hospital be permitted to join the Surgisphere collaborative on their own?

Like, in the US, if my hospital joined this 'collaborative' my local county/state health department could say "We aren't providing any data to Surgisphere" but they could still have my hospital's data.

Because I don't think the authors or Surgisphere are claiming that the public health authorities "sent" them data specifically for this study. Their system automatically integrates data from all of their participating hospitals.

I think this is pretty clear in terms of the state data. Neither Vic not NSW provided data to the database - extracted or automatedpic.twitter.com/9IZhqIjCbG

But also, I feel like I haven't explained well. Individual Aussie hospitals are owned and operated by the states, so if the state health department says they don't use the database they mean none of the hospitals do either

Yes, that's the thing I'm trying to understand (from across the world and in a different healthcare system). In the US, a hospital could join such a "collaborative" and provide their data without the "state health department" having any say in the matter.

Nah they couldn't here. Private hospitals could, but there aren't that many and they haven't treated any COVID cases (many don't have ICUs)

The hospitals are literally the property of the state government, so if they say they aren't a part of the scheme, then that would usually mean none of the hospitals in the state did

I mean, they said the data didn't come from them or reconcile with their COVID data. Not sure you can get more explicit than that
