Sweden's #covid19 strategy architect admits Stockholm won't reach 60% threshold one might expect for herd immunity. "No that will not happen," Tegnell said. Admits he's not sure Sweden's strategy was the right call. Wake up call for contrarian columnists https://www.npr.org/2020/05/25/861923548/stockholm-wont-reach-herd-immunity-in-may-sweden-s-chief-epidemiologist-says …

To be clear, the fact that Anders Tegnell seems to have woken up to the reality shared by other epidemiologists and public health officials around the world is good. It's good for Sweden. Good for the world. I wish them the best.

Yes... The rest of the world has benefited from the knowledge learned from their experiment. I hope they do derive some “personal” benefit. Mark of a good scientist for him to acknowledge the data doesn’t support his hypothesis.

Yes... this: “Tegnell admitted that he is not sure Sweden's strategy was the right call. "I'm not convinced at all - we are constantly thinking about this,". That’s a scientist not an ideologue.

Have to say tho, it was fairly clear that this approach wouldn't work from the start. The fact that they pursued it in the face of conflicting evidence is...not great imo

Fair comment. Sadly, they did the experiment and took the hit on behalf of the rest of the world. We can naively hope that rest of the world has learned from it. It appears at least some countries have looked at this as basis for first steps of loosening restrictions.

Oh totally. We all called out the BS weeks/months ago while the policy disaster was in progress. I'm just doing my best to resist the very real urge to yell out 'i told you so'. I have a few Swedish friends and I can sense a bit of embarrassment among them. It is what it is.

Worth noting though this wasn't purely a "we looked at the evidence and changer our mind" scenario. The evidence was coming in earlier, and the rhetoric was adapting to this, not policy. Strong denials of a 'herd immunity policy', shifting of goal posts etc etc.
